Every year as the summer begins to turn into autumn we make a batch of Fire Cider. If you’ve never heard of Fire Cider, let me quickly inform you about this delightful elixir. Fire Cider finds its origins in the home remedy books of Rosemary Gladstar (although surely the idea is older than that). The idea is simple: take as many hot peppers, garlic, onions, ginger, horseradish, basically as many spicy ingredients you can find and chop them up and macerate them in apple cider vinegar. The fun part about it is that you can make Fire Cider with whatever ingredients you want…we like to add lemons and limes as well as Rosemary and Turmeric. Let it sit for a month and then press out all the juices and add some honey – BOOM! Fire Cider. An incredibly tasty tonic that supports wintertime immunity, digestive, and circulatory support.

Here are just some of the benefits of Fire Cider:

  • Delicious, can be taken straight in a shot glass or added to food. It makes an incredible marinade or salad dressing, etc.
  • It’s all the “antis” – Antimicrobial, Antibacterial, Antiviral, Antifungal, you name it. For this reason it is used to combat colds & flu.
  • It’s powerful digestion support (if you can handle the heat).
  • It’s powerful circulatory support. Herbalists have long used spices to enhances circulation, boosting blood flow to the extremities. Perfect if you are someone who tends towards cold hands and feet in the winter.

We should also take a second to remember that not long ago, the right to make and sell Fire Cider was actually under attack by a company who wanted to “own” the rights to Fire Cider. Thanks to the hard work of certain herbalists who recognize that herbal medicine belongs to the people and that you cannot own the term “Fire Cider” just as you cannot own the term “Apple Pie”. We thank them for their service to herbalism.
