Pipsissewa, Native to southern Canada and the northern United States, has astringent leaves that are also bitter and cool. The leaves have an affinity for the bladder, heart, small intestine and spleen. Medicinal properties include being used as a diuretic, astringent, alterative, aperient, and a bitter tonic. Pipsissewa herb can be decocted as tea, extracted, or prepared for topical application. Michael Tierra, in The Way of Herbs, writes of using Pipsissewa for urinary inflammations in a formula that includes two parts pipsissewa, one part uva ursi, half a part marshamallow root, and one quarter part ginger. Other traditional uses include arthritis and rheumatic conditions.
