St. John’s Wort is most commonly known as an herb used to combat depression and nerve pain, however traditionally it is also known as an herb for the liver. In fact, it achieves its antidepressant action via increasing various enzymes in the liver. This is important to know because it can increase the metabolism of certain pharmaceuticals and thus is contraindicated with a variety of drugs, especially SSRIs and MAOIs, but also birth control and other drugs.

It is indeed a powerful nervine but is also antiviral, anti-inflammatory, astringent, antibacterial, vulnerary, sedative, hepatoprotective (liver protective), and more. If you are taking any pharmaceutical drugs, be sure to talk to your doctor before introducing St. John’s Wort into your diet.
